Searching for your Ancestors Online Course 2021

Join us as we help you start researching your family history. No experience is required. Over the 12 weeks we will give you the knowledge to start woring on your family tree, the skills required to record the essential information & record where your sources come from.

The course will be taught on Zoom, and you will have access to all of the class materials through a dedicated webpage on our website. The sessions will run on Monday night, with a break for Easter Monday.

The course begins on Monday 8th March at 7.30pm. Sessions last 2 hours and nclide a talk and a question and answer session.

Johnstone a planned village of the 18th Century gew from an older small settle know as the Bridge of Johnstone. This heritage walk will explore the different industries that developed in the town curing the 19th Century. The early induistries of the town were textile based, but over time heavy enginerring also developed.

Renfrewshire has a vast heritage when it comes to the castles & mansions of the old County. From tower houses of the 16th Century through to 19th Century mansions built for merchants we have it all. Using Philip Ramsey’s volume ‘Views in Renfrewshire’ we shall explore the landscape of the early 1800s.

Our Kilmacolm Virtual Heritage Walk will explore prehistory of the local area and the early development of the village. We will look at sitres such as Knapps Homestead, Ducahl Motte, Duchal Castle and other features of the landscape.

From pure weaving to weaving poets, this talk will explore the life of the humble Renfrewshire weaver during the late 17th Century through to the early 1800’s. Who were they? Where did they live? What were their lives like? How educated were they?

The Churches of Paisley – Virtual Heritage Walk – 4 Feb 2021 – 7.30pm

This new heritage walk to be delivered online due to current circumstances will explore the rise and demise of churches of Paisley. From the 12th Century Abbey to the modern churches of the 20th Century we will look at why there are so many buildings within the town, and the rise of satelite parishes in the estates of the 1950s. This walk will cover the whole of Paisley, while a future heritage walk (when things begin to return to normal) will let us walk around the town centre, lookjing at the buildings architectural merits in more detail.

History Cafe – Witches of Renfrewshire 3rd February 2pm

In 1629 Renfrewsire witnessed it’s first case of witch allegations, that were to peak in the late 17th Century with the Bargarran Witch Hunt. This short one hour history cafe session will look at some of the allegations from 1629 to 1650 looking at cases all over the old County of Renfrew – many you will not have heard of before! Records of the Privy Council of Scotland provide tha majority of information in this talk.
