Join us as we explore the early history of Paisley Abbey. Why did the monks choose the site? Who were the founders and why did they play an important part in the devlopment of the Abbey and Town. In this talk we will be looking at the time period 1160 to 1560 – 400 years of development and change in the Monastery. A second talk in January 2021 will look at the period 1560 to present day.

The talk will he held on zoom, on Thursday 10 Dec between 7.30 and 9.30pm. Cost is £7.

Our second History talk of winter 2020/21 is looking at Paisley’s Textile Heritage looking at Paisley Town Plans. Since i first did this talk, the National Library of Scotland have digitised new plans of Paisley in addition to the OS First Edition Town Plans of the 1850s which help to show how dominant the textile industry was in Paisley. This revised talk will use both maps, introducing you texitle makers and industries you may not have heard of.

Kilmacolm: Prehistory to the 1800s – Mon 21 Dec 7.30pm

In this talk we are focusing on the village of Kilmacolm, a victorian commutor village folowing the opeing of the railway line through the village. But its history goes back much further into prehistory with the Knapps Farmstead, through to Ducal Motte, Castle and the later Duchal House. Using archaeological evidence and a short virtual walk through the town we will explore the origns of the village. (This talk is rescheduled from Wed 25th November.)

Come and join our penultimate talk of Augst as we look at Paisley & Renfrewshire Weavers – who were they?  where did they live?  What did they weave?  This talk will explore the life of  Weavers, looking at their influence on the town over time, their weaving skill, poetry and literacy, and their radicalism leading to their strike over the sma’ shot and the way in which Paisley became known through the pattern.

The Talk will be held in the Sir James Clark Biulding, Abbey Mill Business Centre, Seedhill, Paisley, PA1 1JS
