Virtual Heritage Walk – Paisley Now & Then

Thursday 25th March 2021, 7.30 – 9.30pm on Zoom


Explore Paisley as it was in the late 19th Century as we walk from the junction of Neilston Road/ Calside down Causeyside Street to Paisley Abbey via the High Street and Abbey Close. using late 19th and early 20th Century photographs of the area, along with 21st Century images we will trace the changes that haver happened over 200 years.

Essential information: The talk will be held on Zoom at 7.30pm on the 25th March. Bookings will close at midday on the day of the event, and invites will be sent out shortly afterwards. The cost of the virtual is £7 per household. If you register, but do not attend the event no refunds are given, but you may be given the opportunity to view the talk if it has been recorded and placed on the courses section of our website.

Johnstone a planned village of the 18th Century gew from an older small settle know as the Bridge of Johnstone. This heritage walk will explore the different industries that developed in the town curing the 19th Century. The early induistries of the town were textile based, but over time heavy enginerring also developed.

Our Kilmacolm Virtual Heritage Walk will explore prehistory of the local area and the early development of the village. We will look at sitres such as Knapps Homestead, Ducahl Motte, Duchal Castle and other features of the landscape.

The Churches of Paisley – Virtual Heritage Walk – 4 Feb 2021 – 7.30pm

This new heritage walk to be delivered online due to current circumstances will explore the rise and demise of churches of Paisley. From the 12th Century Abbey to the modern churches of the 20th Century we will look at why there are so many buildings within the town, and the rise of satelite parishes in the estates of the 1950s. This walk will cover the whole of Paisley, while a future heritage walk (when things begin to return to normal) will let us walk around the town centre, lookjing at the buildings architectural merits in more detail.

Following on from our look at Paisley’s textile industry on the 16th January, This virtual walk will look at the rise of the Fergulsie Mills in the west of the town. Dating to 1826 when James Coats established the first Cotton Mill on the site, the complex grew rapidly to become the largest thread mill site in Scotland if not the UK or the World. Using privately published works of the Coats family along with maps, and photographs we will take a brief look at the history of the site as we ‘walk’ around the surving buildings on the site.

This virtual walk will explorre the origns of Linen Thread manufacting in Scotland then go on to look at it’s rapid rise in Paisley which gavce the workers of the town the skills to move into Silk and then Cotton Thread making, along with the other key industries of Paisley in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Join us at 3pm on Zoom as we explore Paisley – Investigating what lies beneath our feet as we walk around Paisley. Since the late 1800’s there have been many street alterations such as street re-alignments & widening. This walk will explore some of the streets that were widened, aling with some of the monastic buldings and features that have now disapeared from sight using maps, images and archaeological evidence.

Johnstone Virtual Textile Heritage Walk 5 Dec 1pm

Due to local restrictions this walk will now be run as an Online Event via Zoom.

Johnstone is a planned village set out in the later 18th Century. It has its origins in a small community known as the Bridge of Johnstone. This heritage walk will explore the history of the textile industry.
