Talk: Clarks & Coats: An introduction to the textile families – 22 Feb 7.30pm

The Clark & Coats families both establised thread mills in Paisley during the early years of the 19th Century, but what do we know of their origins? What brought them to Paisley? What were the occupations of the early families? Where did they live? Therse are just some of the topics that will be discussed, along with their move into cotton thread production, and the rise of the largest mill complexes in Scotland, if not the world. The talk will cover the period up to the 1860s.
